THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OASES OF MOROCCO

Do you dream of a camel ride in the Sahara Desert in Morocco? Do not forget that this country of a hundred landscapes also offers some surprising oases, rich in vegetation and colors, which come to contrast with the dryness of the surrounding plains.

Come and fill yourself up, as animals and shepherds do, in these miraculous oases.

The oasis of Ziz:

It is perhaps one of the best known around the world: the oasis of Ziz is a true paradise in the heart of the Sahara, the largest desert in the world. Fortunately, it is not an illusion, but a magnificent water point formed by an almost dry river.

Go to the villages of Tafilalet or Aoufous, hidden in the middle of a large palm forest, which you would never think of finding in the middle of the desert. Water allows locals to practice agriculture despite the arid conditions of the Sahara: there are many fruits and grains.

Historically, it is a very important place for Morocco. Point of trade for spices, it is also here that the Alawite dynasty was born.

The oasis of Ksar Ait Ben Haddou:

Arriving near Skoura, you will have an impression of deja-vu. And for good reason: the Ksar Ait Ben Haddou complex served as the backdrop for many shootings, including those of Gladiator and Game of Thrones. It’s here that Queen Daenerys freed the slaves of Yunkai, her first conquest.

This earthen castle, pre-Saharan, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was an important trading point in the 17th century.

The Skoura region, fed by two seasonal rivers, is known for its palms, olive trees and even fig trees. You can also taste local goat cheese and admire the craftsmanship of the locals. The latter have already had the opportunity to appear in major films, by the way.

Take a day to explore this oasis and historic center, home to many buildings, and even a dinosaur cemetery.

Tinghir oasis:

This green valley, located at the crossroads between two mountain ranges, stretches for 30 km, in a dry environment devoid of vegetation. Its cultivated fields and its palette of green colors contrast sharply with the dry and red rocks that surround it.

Rich with 44,000 inhabitants, the region is equipped with canals for crops. You can also admire beautiful clay and earthen constructions, which only add to this natural charm.

Take the opportunity to visit the Todra canyon, with its vertiginous walls climbing up to 160 meters. It’s also a world famous climbing spot.

Fint's oasis:

Its name, Fint, means in Berber "hidden", and it is the case to say it. Nestled high in the Atlas Mountains, about 20 kilometers from Ouarzazate, this small oasis is inhabited by an Amazigh people of farmers. Their houses blend perfectly into the rocky landscape, interspersed with a small waterhole and tall palm trees. It’s a small island of peace, modest, where women still do their laundry in the stream. The population has a fascinating culture and music, a mix between the Berber, African and Arab world.

Zagora oasis:

Not far from Fint Oasis, Zagora Oasis is known for its thousands of fruit trees. Border of southwest Morocco, it was the stronghold of the Almovarides. You can discover their history in the Museum of Arts and Traditions.

Take the opportunity to explore the beautiful Draa Valley along the river. Zagora is the last town in the Saharan desert, and a good base camp for your adventures in the great outdoors.
