To discover Morocco is to discover the monuments, the beauties of the heritage, and its landscapes. But it is also when you are a country attached to its traditions like Morocco, to discover its culture, represented by Moroccan craftsmanship or its way of dressing.

Unlike other countries that have lost their clothing identity, Morocco is proud to present its caftan, always in fashion, to the world.

What is the Moroccan caftan?

It is a long dress that Moroccan women wear at home but also when attending special events. Yes, they can dress proudly in their Moroccan caftan at a wedding or a birth. This one had started to gain popularity in the world thanks to the stylists who presented it through fashion shows. With a personal and more advanced touch, many have fallen in love with this oriental dress. A Moroccan caftan is the marriage of elegance and modernity without leaving aside the traditional. Often, we recognize a Moroccan caftan thanks to its beautiful embroidery and ornaments. Also, it is open and transparent.

The history of the Moroccan caftan:

Caftan is of Persian and Ottoman origin. It was not until the 15th century that it was introduced to Andalusia through trade-in caravans around the Mediterranean. Suffice it to say that the caftan has as many descriptions as countries that he has crossed.

On the other hand, it is the Mauro-Andalusians living in Morocco who have preserved this ceremonial dress. The craftsmen of Meknès, Fès, Tétouan, and Rabat knew how to keep this know-how. Moreover, the first Moroccan writings in which the caftan is cited date from the 16th century. Today, this traditional outfit is regularly worn by Moroccan women at weddings or religious festivals.

Caftans differ in their cuts but also in the play of noble materials (silk, brocade, lace, etc.), embroidery, beading, and colors. To bring a touch of modernity, Moroccan creators do not hesitate to bet on revisited cuts, leather, jeans ... For a few years now, the term "caftan" has taken on a new dimension. Indeed, the big fashion houses were inspired to create tunics, like the model Dolce & Gabbana which had been seen on the singer Rihanna.

At the very beginning, the caftan was a garment intended to be worn by men. Originally, it was a simple tunic. Originally from Mesopotamia, its history is lost in the mists of time. With the expansion of Islam to the Persian world, the caftan became popular and reached Morocco. It was adopted and adapted by Moroccan royalty during the Merinid dynasty. Subsequently, it gained popularity and was adopted universally.

Having evolved, it is now worn with a belt, without forgetting the matching jewelry. Caftans are usually long, wide, straight or almost flared, sleeveless and hooded. They are open in the middle and sprinkled or not with buttons. Trade, the arrival of fabrics from other countries helped transform the old caftan into the one we know today in Morocco. The Moroccan caftan is the fruit of the mixture of various cultures.

Today, kaftans "kaftans" are mainly worn by women in Morocco, and the word kaftan "kaftan" in Morocco means "one-piece dress". The alternative two-piece versions of the Moroccan caftan "Kaftan" are called "Takchita" and are worn with a large belt. The takchita is also known as Mansouria and derives from the name of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, who invented Al-Mansouria, and from the new way of wearing a two-piece caftan

The Moroccan CAFTAN and the TAKCHITA?

Often, non-Moroccan designers confuse Moroccan Caftan and Takchita, so they don't tell the difference between a Takchita and a Caftan, they all call them Moroccan Caftan. The truth is that Moroccan women and stylists from Moroccan culture make the difference between the two:

The Takchita:

A two-piece dress made up of two parts: the Tahtiya which is the first layer (a traditional Moroccan caftan simple and without ornaments), and Fouqia or dfina, the second layer.

A Moroccan caftan is often open and transparent with lots of beautiful embroidery and ornaments.

A Takchita is generally worn with a Mdamma (belt), either in silk or in gold or in silver decorated with precious stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald)
